Something inside Ethan released.
Quietly.
The soundless equivalent of a held breath escaping.
"Thank you."
He swallowed.
"When do I have to respond?"
"End of the month. That gives you time to decide and complete enrollment paperwork."
Then Linda's voice changed slightly.
Less institutional.
More human.
"David told me some of your background."
Ethan listened.
"I want you to understand something. You earned this through the assessment process, not through whoever advocated for you."
She emphasized it.
"Your scores stand on their own."
"I know."
Ethan did know.
And he needed to know.
He needed the line to remain clear between the door people opened and the distance he crossed himself.
"Good luck."
"Thank you."
The call ended.
Ethan remained on the garage floor.
Back against the sedan.
Phone resting in his lap.
Machinery and work continued around him.
Spring semester.
Reenrollment.
Prior credits.
He allowed the facts to settle.
Then stood.
Went looking for Gus.
Gus was at his workbench performing some precise task requiring complete attention.
He looked up.
"Maricopa called."
Gus waited.
"Spring-semester reenrollment."
Gus stared at him.
Then nodded once.
Slowly.
The single nod of a man whose nods carried more information than most people's speeches.
"Good."
He returned to his work.
Ethan stood there.
"That's it?"
Gus looked up again.
"What?"
"Good?"
Something near a smile appeared on Gus's face.
His expressions didn't make conventional smiles often, but this belonged somewhere adjacent.
"What else you want me to say?"
"I don't know. It's just... it's a big thing."
"It is."
Gus met his eyes.
"And you earned it. So, good."
He pointed slightly.
"That's a full sentence from me, son. Don't undersell it."
Ethan laughed.
Actually laughed.
Unprotected.
The sound felt strange in his own ears.
Not because he never laughed.
Because this laugh came from somewhere he'd kept closed for so long that it opened without permission.
That evening, Ethan called Marcus from his room.
Marcus answered on the second ring.
"Maricopa called."
"I know."
Of course.
"Linda texted David. David texted me about 20 minutes ago."
"Of course he did."
Marcus ignored the tone.
"How do you feel?"
Not how did it go.
Marcus already knew the outcome.
How do you feel?
Ethan thought about the real question.
"Like something got unstuck."
He sat on the edge of the bed.
"Something I'd stopped believing was possible became possible again."
A pause.
