Cole’s father had died before Mara returned to Red Mesa, but the old man had known about her.

That surprised Mara.

Cole found a notebook while clearing his father’s house after the clinic opened. One page contained a short entry dated the week after Mara first stopped at the gas station.

COLE GAVE A STRANDED GIRL NEARLY ALL HIS MONEY. FOOLISH. GOOD.

Mara laughed until she cried.

Cole stared at the page for a long time.

His relationship with his father had been complicated. Illness consumed their final years. They rarely discussed affection directly. Yet those two words—foolish, good—felt like approval smuggled past pride.

Mara had the page copied and framed for him.

Cole kept it beside the clinic keys.

The discovery softened something in him. He began speaking more openly with younger staff about caregiving, disappointment, and how easy it was to believe a delayed dream had become a dead one.

His garage never opened.

But the mechanical bay of the clinic filled every day with ambulances, rescue vans, generators, and vehicles he kept running.

One afternoon he looked around and said, “Maybe I got the garage. Just not the version I ordered.”

Mara wrote that down too.
