He unwrapped the sandwich.
Adrian smelled it from two tables away.
He stood.
“Sir.”
Leonard looked up.
“I would not eat that until they check it.”
Vanessa appeared.
Again.
As if Adrian’s movement activated an alarm.
“Mr. Cole.”
“Sit down.”
Adrian ignored her.
Leonard asked:
“Why?”
“My tray came from the same batch.”
“There are signs it may not have been held properly.”
Gloria smelled the fruit.
Immediately pushed it away.
“That’s sour.”
She said.
Adrian signaled an attendant.
“Please bring whoever is responsible for food safety.”
Vanessa stepped between him and the employee.
“That is enough.”
“No.”
Adrian said.
“We’re checking it.”
“You do not have authority here.”
“Then get someone who does.”
“I am the manager responsible for this lounge.”
“Then manage it.”
Her face hardened.
“You have been difficult from the moment you arrived.”
Leonard looked up.
“He hasn’t been difficult.”
Gloria added:
“He warned my husband about bad food.”
Vanessa barely acknowledged them.
She reached for her radio.
“Airport security to Meridian Crown.”
Maya stepped forward.
“Vanessa.”
“Stop serving the batch first.”
Vanessa turned.
“What?”
“The fruit.”
“The sandwiches.”
“We need to hold them until somebody checks.”
“Return to the podium.”
“But—”
“Now.”
Maya did not move.
Vanessa stared.
“Are you refusing a direct instruction?”
Maya’s face went pale.
Then something changed.
“I’m saying we shouldn’t serve food somebody says smells spoiled.”
Vanessa’s thumb pressed the radio.
“Security requested.”
Adrian looked at Maya.
For nine months, she had filed reports quietly.
Lost shifts.
Stayed.
Watched guests doubt themselves.
Now she had finally contradicted Vanessa in public.
The next few minutes mattered.
Adrian had gone as far as he was willing to go.
Observation ended when another person’s health became part of the test.
Two airport security officers entered.
They were not aggressive.
One, Officer Reed, looked around before speaking.
“What’s happening?”
Vanessa pointed at Adrian.
“This gentleman is causing a disturbance.”
Adrian almost admired how quickly the story formed.
“He refuses staff direction.”
“He has approached other guests.”
“He is interfering with food service.”
“He has repeatedly challenged employees.”
Officer Reed turned toward Adrian.
“Sir?”
Adrian stood with both hands visible.
“Has anyone accused me of threatening them?”
The officer looked at Vanessa.
“No.”
“Touching anyone?”
“No.”
“Damaging property?”
“No.”
“Raising my voice?”
Gloria said:
“He hasn’t.”
Leonard nodded.
“Not once.”
Adrian gestured toward the tray.
“He reported that his food appeared improperly stored.”
Officer Reed said.
“Their food.”
Adrian corrected.
“Mine too.”
“And the manager has not had anyone verify it.”
Vanessa interrupted.
“That is being handled.”
Dr. Simone Hayes stood from two tables away.
“It isn’t.”
Everyone turned.
She lifted the cup.
