On Thursday she told Richard, “When he comes, you will offer him a drink before you offer him an interview.”

“I know how to have a guest.”

“You know how to have a guest you’ve already decided to respect.”

He looked injured. She let him look injured. Injury was cheaper than the scene she was trying to prevent.

She also talked to Sarah, not as a general, as a mother who remembered the heat in a girl’s face when a parent’s opinion lands in public. “You can be proud of him and still let him speak for himself.”

Sarah said, “That’s the whole plan.”

Claire nodded. “And if your father starts ranking him, you don’t have to win the room. You just don’t have to stand there and shrink.”

Sarah hugged her, sudden and brief. Claire held on half a second longer than the hug required.

There was a part of Claire that was tired in a way she did not put on the table. Tired of translating her husband to her daughter and her daughter to her husband. Tired of being the shock absorber in a house that looked, from the street, as if it had excellent suspension. She loved them both. Love, in a family, is often the job of standing in the gap and getting struck from both sides. She would do it again on this evening. She already knew she would. A person can see her own hand moving before the moment arrives: one palm on a navy sleeve, a voice with the name Richard in it, the hope that a man who stacks chairs at church can hear himself in his own living room.

She checked the photographs on the mantel and straightened the one of Sarah at eight. The missing tooth made her smile, then ache. That child had trusted the room completely. This one was about to walk a young man into it and ask the room to be as large as she was.

The week before the dinner, the house practiced a version of welcome that never quite made it out of rehearsal.
