His belt buckle scraped across the gas tank.

A long silver mark appeared.

Rosie stopped eating.

She saw the change in Rusty’s face.

Not anger.

Something colder.

Pain.

That motorcycle mattered.

Rusty stood.

“Get off.”

Trent laughed.

Then Rusty moved.

Fast.

Much faster than anyone expected.

He grabbed Trent’s jacket and pulled him off the bike.

Trent hit the ground hard.

The laughter disappeared.

The humiliation appeared.

And humiliation was dangerous in people who had never learned control.

“You touched me?”

Trent stood.

“You embarrassed me?”

Bryce and Logan stepped forward.

Rosie immediately knew what was happening.

She had seen it before.

Three against one.

The kind of cruelty people committed when they thought nobody would stop them.

Rusty fought.

He was good.

Years of experience showed.

But three against one was three against one.

Eventually, numbers won.

A hit.

A fall.

A steel flashlight.

Rusty went down.

Rosie froze.

Every instinct screamed at her.

Run.

Hide.

Disappear.

That was how she survived.

Then she saw the coffee.

The empty cup.

The food.

The old man who had treated her like a human being.

And something inside her changed.

For three months, Rosie had been invisible.

But maybe being invisible was not the same as being powerless.

She stood.

“Stop!”

Her voice shook.

Nobody listened.

So she ran.

She threw herself over Rusty.

Her small body covered his.

Trent stared.

“What are you doing?”

Rosie grabbed Rusty’s jacket.

“Leave him alone.”

“You want to be next?”

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The answer surprised even Trent.

Then the boots came.

Pain.

Everywhere.

But Rosie refused to move.

She thought about every person who had walked past her.

Every person who decided she wasn’t worth seeing.

And for the first time in her life, she decided someone else was worth protecting.

Underneath her, Rusty slowly woke.

He saw her.

The homeless girl.

The girl he gave food to.

Taking hits meant for him.

“Why?” he whispered.

Rosie didn’t answer.

She couldn’t.

She was too busy holding on.

Then Rusty’s jacket shifted.

The leather underneath became visible.

Three patches.

The Arizona rocker.

The winged skull.

The Hells Angels colors.

Everything stopped.

Bryce saw it first.

His face changed.

“Trent…”

Trent looked down.

The confidence disappeared.

Because everyone in Arizona knew.

You did not disrespect the colors.

You did not hurt someone wearing them.

And worst of all…

You never hurt someone who protected one of them.

They ran.

Leaving Rosie and Rusty in the rain.

Rusty barely managed to reach into his jacket.

His fingers found his phone.

One number.

That was all.
