Six-year-old Sophie Mercer heard her mother's voice through the locked service-room door three minutes before the wedding music was supposed to begin. The voice was weak, but Sophie knew it immediately. For fourteen months she had fallen asleep listening to an old phone recording of Laura singing “Moon River” while washing dishes. Now the same voice whispered her name from behind dark wood. Sophie pressed both palms to the door. “Mommy?” A scrape answered from inside, followed by a breathless warning. “Find your father. Do not tell Vivian first.”

The corridor smelled of lilies and furniture polish. At the far end, guests were taking their seats beneath chandeliers while Andrew Mercer waited in a tuxedo to marry Vivian Cross, the woman who had spent the last year convincing him that Laura had abandoned both husband and daughter. Sophie wore a pink tulle dress Vivian had chosen. She hated the stiff collar and the shoes that pinched her toes, but until that second she had believed the wedding might finally make everybody stop speaking in careful voices around her.

She pulled the brass handle. Locked.

“Daddy!” she shouted.

Vivian appeared before Andrew did. Her veil floated behind her as she crossed the corridor, beautiful and furious in the same instant. Sophie pointed toward the door. “My mom is in there.”

Vivian's expression betrayed her before her words did. She looked at the handle, not at Sophie. Then she seized the child's wrist and lowered her voice. “You are confused again. We talked about this.” Sophie twisted free and fell against the carpet runner. Vivian told her to stop making a scene.

Andrew hurried from the ballroom and saw his daughter crying. Sophie said the woman behind the door had called him by name. Vivian insisted grief was making Sophie imagine things. Andrew stared at the locked service room, then at the bride who suddenly seemed more interested in stopping him than comforting his daughter.

A hotel employee brought a master key. Vivian stepped between Andrew and the lock. “Our guests are waiting.”

Andrew took the key from the employee. “Then they can wait.”

The lock turned. From inside, a woman whispered, “Andrew, please.” Every new document answered one question while quietly creating another that nobody could ignore. Every new document answered one question while quietly creating another that nobody could ignore. Every new document answered one question while quietly creating another that nobody could ignore. Every new document answered one question while quietly creating another that nobody could ignore. Every new document answered one question while quietly creating another that nobody could ignore. Every new document answered one question while quietly creating another that nobody could ignore. That mattered. That mattered.
