Derek asked Cole, once, if he was mad at his dad. Cole said sometimes, and mostly he was mad that the kitchen sentence had been said at all. Derek said that was specific. Cole said specific was better. He had learned specific from a woman who would not let a number stay fake. He did not explain Lisa. Explaining Lisa was not a sleepover job. He beat Derek at the game. The sound was up. Lisa, in the kitchen, heard the sound up and did not mute it. Up was progress. She let the progress be loud.

Rick kept the long way to the store. Eight minutes. A tax. He used the minutes to practice not saying one time to anyone, including himself. The practice worked until it didn’t, and when it didn’t he called Mike instead of Lisa. Mike said receipt, not character. Rick said I remember. Memory was the punishment and the tool. He brought Cole back on time. The tool was visible. Lisa saw on time and filed it under grammar, not under return. Return was not on offer. Grammar was. They both spoke it. Cole translated when he had to and otherwise lived in the middle, which was a backpack and two beds and a replica that was clothes.

Lisa’s review note turned into a small raise. She spent part of it on a lamp that worked better than the excuse. The couch stayed six inches off its old mark. The scratch stayed. Pam said the room looked like a room. Lisa said that was the win. Pam brought bad coffee to celebrate a room. They drank it on the step. No fury required. Fury had done its job. The job now was ordinary. Ordinary had wings in it again, carefully. Lisa could be careful. Careful was not the same as afraid of a phone. The phone in the closet was taped. The phone in her hand was hers. She checked a score because Cole had asked her to look, not because a preview had ambushed her. Looking on purpose was a different muscle. She used it. She texted harsh. He texted back. The dialect held. The house held. The boy who had turned around on the carpet was in a friend’s living room yelling at a referee, and he knew he could come home and tell it, and that knowledge was the snap she had refused to spend him on.
