Calvin looked at the door, and then at the two of them, and his face was grave.

"I couldn't tell you," he said. "It's an old building. The walls are thin."

Emma was sitting on a wooden stool in the back room among the old cameras, holding Calvin's phone in both hands, looking at the screen without seeing it. The room smelled of dust and old leather. On the shelves behind her stood bellows cameras and box cameras and a stereoscope with two round eyepieces like a pair of startled owls. When her parents came in she put the phone down on the workbench, screen up, very neatly, and stood, and smoothed her cream dress, and said, "Are we going home now?" in a voice so polite that Natalie's heart turned over.

"Yes, baby," Natalie said. "We're going home."

At the front door, Calvin shook Adam's hand. Adam let him, briefly. Then Calvin turned to Emma and bent a little, so his face was level with hers.
