The result arrived Friday at 10:14 in the morning. Sarah received the email first because the clinic account had been opened under her address. She did not open it alone. She called David, who called Megan out of school, and Connor drove himself to Sarah’s house.

They gathered around the dining table where Connor had done homework since third grade. Sarah opened the PDF. Probability of paternity: greater than 99.99 percent. Nobody gasped.

There are truths too heavy for theatrical reaction. Connor read the line twice and sat back. Megan covered her mouth. David stared at the report and experienced, impossibly, two emotions at once: grief so deep it almost felt like physical illness and a surge of recognition toward the boy across the table that he immediately hated himself for feeling.

Connor looked at him. “Do not look happy.” David’s face collapsed. “I’m not.”

“You looked like it for a second.” “I’m sorry.” Connor stood up. “I need to go.”

Sarah reached for him. “Connor—” “No.” He stepped away from her hand. “Everybody has needed something from me for four days.

Megan needs me not to be her boyfriend. You need me to understand why you lied. He needs me to maybe become his son. I need one day where nobody tells me what this means.”

He left. Megan began crying after the front door shut. Not loudly. She sat at the table with tears moving down her cheeks while staring at the DNA report.
