The words go into the marble and stay.

The smudged mascara makes her eyes look wounded and awake. The cream sweater is still against the counter. She does not speak. The ten seconds do not give her another line.
Richard is speechless. The flush does not leave, but the next sentence does. Born in this family has met a boy who remembers the room where family was chosen. The gray henley rises and falls. The trimmed stubble holds a mouth that has nothing ready.
The camera ends on a medium-wide freeze of all three. Andre in front of his mother. Megan stunned. Richard speechless. Hardwood under white sneakers and house slippers and the unseen stance of a man who has just been told that a legal yes can be taken back. The two wine glasses still on the counter. The photographs still on the refrigerator. The island still between them and no longer between them.
No extra line.
The freeze holds.
That is the whole ten seconds.
The kitchen remains a kitchen. The family remains a family in the only way that photograph on the fridge ever promised: not by blood, by a yes. Tonight the yes has a condition, and the condition is a shoulder that must not be touched again.
