Farid Qasim looked older up close than he had through the scope. His beard was streaked with gray, and he moved with the calm of a man who had survived long enough to mistake survival for invincibility. Two armed guards stood behind him, but Qasim lifted one hand and told them to wait. “You have your father's eyes,” he said. Jack hated him immediately for saying it. Vale's voice still came through the speaker, but Qasim seemed to enjoy controlling the room himself. He explained that the network had begun as a temporary arrangement during a chaotic war: money exchanged for information, information exchanged for safe routes, safe routes eventually turned into profitable corridors. By the time anyone realized what it had become, too many careers depended on keeping it buried. Thomas Mercer had found the first ledger. Mara Velez found the second. Jack, without knowing it, had become useful because his reputation gave Vale a believable way to eliminate Qasim if the partnership ever needed to end. “But Vale changed his mind,” Jack said. Qasim smiled. “He changes sides when survival requires it.” Briggs whispered, “He's recording this.” Qasim's expression shifted. That tiny reaction told Jack Briggs was right. Vale was not speaking freely because he felt safe. He was building a version of events. If Jack and Briggs died here, the recording could be edited to show Qasim confessing while two rogue soldiers initiated violence. Everyone would get the story they needed. Jack looked at the burned racks again. One small server at the far wall still showed a green status light. Mara must have known the site would be wiped. She would not have sent them here for paper alone. Jack asked Qasim about his father, deliberately keeping him talking. Qasim boasted that Thomas had refused money and refused extraction. “Your father believed loyalty protected him.” Jack felt anger rise, but he did not let it decide his next move. Briggs slowly shifted toward the live server. Qasim noticed. The guards raised their weapons. Then every light in the room went out. For three seconds, darkness swallowed everyone. When emergency lights returned, Briggs was gone. So was the server drive. And Colonel Vale, for the first time all night, sounded afraid. He kept his breathing steady and let the others reveal themselves through fear. Qasim feared Vale. Vale feared the archive. The guards feared both men. Jack had nothing left to protect except the truth and Briggs's chance to escape. For the first time that night, having less to lose gave him an advantage no one in the room had planned for. Jack stayed focused on the next decision because the story around him was still changing,
