Nathan told Silas about the distinction before he mentioned it to anyone else. Silas stared at the report for a long time. For years he had believed Victor personally concealed the warning. Now the document indicated that Pike had received it and possibly ignored it. Silas asked whether that made Victor innocent. Nathan said it did not excuse the assault at the diner, and it did not settle the older accident either. Each act required its own evidence. Silas said the uncertainty hurt, but he would rather learn a complicated truth than keep repeating an accusation that might be wrong.
They met Calvin at a public library near Toledo. He arrived wearing a faded union jacket and carrying a ring binder whose edges had been repaired with tape. His hands had the thick, scarred look of someone who spent decades rebuilding machinery. Priya explained why they were there and told Calvin they would use his recollection only with his permission. He agreed and began by sketching the lift mechanism on a sheet of notebook paper. According to Calvin, the locking pins should have held the platform independently of the lifting cable. Once the metal cracked, the equipment could appear functional while no longer protecting workers during a sudden drop. He remembered hearing the pins click irregularly on the previous shift. He submitted a written warning and wanted the lift tagged out until replacement parts arrived. Pike objected to losing a scheduled shipment. Victor, then a junior supervisor, argued that the repair could not be delayed. The argument ended when Pike ordered work to resume. Calvin's account did not excuse Victor. He had authority to stop work in an immediate danger, though he feared dismissal and had little support. Calvin admitted he also wished he had refused to work near the lift. Everyone had weighed the threat of unemployment against a risk they had hoped would not materialize. Silas was the one who suffered when their hopes proved wrong. They asked Calvin about the allegation that Silas entered a restricted area. He frowned. Silas's inspection badge had been visible, and a supervisor had specifically called him to examine the lift. Calvin showed them a duplicate work order listing the inspection appointment. Priya photographed it and arranged to obtain a verifiable copy. Silas sat silently for several minutes afterward. Outside, the weather was mild. People crossed the library parking lot carrying books, shopping bags and children. Silas told Nathan that he had imagined the day a witness would support him. He had expected relief to arrive all at once. They carefully preserved what they had learned that day.
He agreed that the lawyer should contact Calvin and other former employees without intimidation.
