Adrian Cole's house stood back from the river road behind pecan trees and a gate that usually existed for appearance more than defense. That evening he ordered it barred.

The staff prepared a guest room upstairs. Vivienne Marchand refused it because it had only one door. She chose a smaller room near the kitchen with two windows and a narrow service stair. Adrian Cole noticed but did not comment. A woman who had been confined had earned the right to decide where she slept.

A doctor examined her injuries and found dehydration, a healing concussion, rope burns, and older bruises that suggested weeks of repeated restraint. When he asked whether she had been struck, she answered, “Enough to teach me when not to speak.”

After dark, Adrian Cole sat in his study with every newspaper clipping he could find. The public record described disappearance, grief, legal transfer, and eventually death. Nothing in print resembled the woman downstairs.

Near midnight, his housekeeper entered with a folded scrap found inside the lining of Vivienne Marchand's torn dress. It held only six words: FIND MOSES LANE BEFORE THEY FIND YOU.

Moses Lane, a Black typesetter who saved proof sheets before the newspaper office burned, lived less than a day’s ride away.

Before Adrian Cole could decide what to do, a dog began barking near the eastern gate.

Someone was already outside.

Food, clean water, and a locked room meant little until she believed no one would drag her away again. He ordered every visitor announced and every gate watched after sunset. The house became a refuge, but also a target. Inside the house, servants moved carefully around a guest who still flinched at opening doors. The humid night pressed close around the house as everyone weighed what came next. Still the road ahead.
