Isaiah returned to Bellweather Diner because he needed the security footage from the rainy night. Glen refused, saying the cameras belonged to the business. Then a waitress named Tessa quietly led Isaiah into the office while Glen was unloading supplies. The footage showed Walter arriving alone. Fifteen minutes later a dark sedan parked across the street and remained there until Isaiah brought the meal outside. When the car finally left, the driver’s silhouette was visible for a fraction of a second. A pale line crossed the man’s left cheek and disappeared toward his ear. Isaiah could not tell whether it was a scar or reflected light. Tessa copied the recording onto a small drive and promised not to mention it.
Glen’s office was barely big enough for a desk, two filing cabinets, and the narrow shelf holding account books. Through the wall Isaiah could hear the cook arguing with a delivery driver about missing produce. The ordinary sounds helped keep his fear from growing too large. Tessa watched the footage beside him, her fingers resting lightly on the keyboard. Neither pretended that a blurry recording could identify a criminal. Yet the timing of the sedan was worth preserving, and the camera showed the man remained interested in Walter even after Isaiah entered the scene. When Tessa handed over the drive, she made him promise to keep an untouched copy for investigators. She had learned the value of careful records from years of balancing the diner receipts.
Tessa had known Naomi years earlier, when the diner still served workers leaving the Orchard Street clinic. Naomi often sat at the back table with a cup of tea she forgot to drink. Tessa remembered one conversation in particular. Naomi had asked whether the diner’s old security tapes were kept after the owner installed new cameras. She had seemed relieved when told they were. Tessa also recalled a fire alarm sounding at the clinic on a night when nobody reported smoke. It had been treated as a maintenance mistake. Isaiah realized that the danger surrounding his mother had started well before the blaze.
The cook shouted that the grill had gone cold. Tessa answered automatically and returned to the screen. Outside, traffic continued with the indifference of a city unaware that something important had surfaced in a cramped office. Isaiah saved the timestamp in his notebook. Whatever the footage meant, it could not remain merely another unsettling image in his head. Nobody in the room could change the past, but they could decide what to do next. He considered the consequences
As they finished copying the footage, Glen appeared in the doorway. He was carrying a photograph of Naomi that Isaiah had never seen.
