Maya barely slept that night. The letter rested on her kitchen table beside the tarnished silver button, its blue thread curled like a question mark. Every time she tried closing her eyes, she imagined Thomas searching through discarded food while carrying secrets about her mother.

Her younger brother, Jordan, arrived shortly after sunrise.

He was twenty-two, studying automotive technology at the community college, and recovering from a complicated leg injury that required expensive physical therapy. Maya had helped raise him after Evelyn died. Their father disappeared when they were children, leaving Evelyn to support them alone.

Jordan noticed the letter immediately.

"What's that?"

Maya hesitated.

"Something about Mom."

She explained the encounter behind the diner, Thomas's unexpected knowledge of Evelyn, and the visit from Adrian Wells. Jordan listened without speaking, his expression growing increasingly serious.

"Did Mom ever mention someone named Ward?" she asked.

He shook his head.

"I was eleven when she died. I barely remember where she worked."

Maya showed him the silver button.

Jordan examined it carefully.

"Wait. I've seen this before."

"Where?"

"In Mom's sewing box."

Maya frowned.

The sewing box had remained in storage since Evelyn's death. They kept it because neither sibling could bear to throw away her belongings, but they'd never examined everything inside.

They drove to a storage unit across town, where Maya rented a small space for Christmas decorations, family photographs, and the furniture salvaged from their childhood home.

The box sat beneath a stack of blankets.

It was dark wood, scratched along the edges, with a brass clasp shaped like a flower. Inside were needles, spools of thread, fabric scraps, and a photograph of Evelyn standing outside the textile factory.

Jordan searched through the compartments.

Then he found a hidden drawer beneath the lining.

Inside lay three silver buttons, each attached to a length of blue thread.

Maya placed Thomas's button beside them.

They matched exactly.

Beneath the buttons was a folded note in Evelyn's handwriting.

Four buttons for four witnesses. If one disappears, the others must remember.

Jordan stared at the message.

"What witnesses?"

Maya unfolded another paper tucked underneath.

It listed four names.

Thomas Ward.

Evelyn Ellis.

Samuel Price.

Nora Bennett.

Beside each name was a date and a number.

At the bottom, Evelyn had written one additional sentence.

The documents are hidden where the machines cannot reach.

Maya studied the handwriting.

Her mother had always been careful with words, but this message sounded almost frightened.

Then Jordan pointed toward the final name.

"Nora Bennett?"

Maya nodded.

Jordan looked uneasy.

"That's our landlord."
