Carlos did not raise his voice. He never needed to. He looked at the watch as if it were a document, as if the metal itself had signed a confession. Then he looked at Amara again, and whatever softness he had carried from the soccer field and the grocery list and the ordinary hope of homework drained out of his expression one careful drop at a time.

"Sophia," he said, and his voice found the father register even while everything else in him was breaking formation. "Baby. Close the workbook. Take your brother upstairs and brush your teeth. Both of you. Pajamas. Now."

Sophia's braid tipped. "But we weren't finished with the pizza problem."

"We'll finish tomorrow," Carlos said. The promise cost him. "Teeth. Please."

Amara moved as if to help Julian with the belt, but Carlos's glance stopped her without a word. He unbuckled the dark leather himself, knelt on the hardwood in his socks, and freed his son from the ridiculous loop with a tenderness that felt like the last clean thing he could still do. Julian's curls bounced when he laughed, not understanding that the laugh had nowhere safe to land.

"Can I keep the watch for dress-up?" Julian asked.

"No," Carlos said gently. "Upstairs. Sophia will help you with your dinosaur pajamas."
