But there was something else there too. Gratitude.

The woman stood slowly, still keeping Maggie close. Her hands trembled as she brushed grass from her jeans. Then she took a breath and walked toward him.

“I can’t thank you enough,” she said, her voice unsteady. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “I only looked away for a second to answer a work call, and then she was...” Her voice cracked before she finished.

Ryder shifted uncomfortably beneath the gratitude in her eyes. The leather of his vest creaked as he shrugged.

“Anyone would have done the same.” “No.” The woman shook her head. “They wouldn’t have. Most people would have just walked away.”

She squeezed Maggie’s hand. “I’m so sorry she bothered you. She knows she’s not supposed to talk to strangers.”

She stopped herself, hearing how the sentence sounded. “Mr. Ryder has pretty pictures on his arms, Mommy,” Maggie announced brightly. “Like a coloring book.”

A flush climbed the woman’s neck. “Maggie, honey, don’t point.”

She looked back at Ryder. “I’m sorry. She’s at that age where everything is fascinating.”

Ryder’s lips twitched toward a smile. “Kids say what they see.”

The woman nodded. “I’m Clare, by the way.”

“Ryder.” “I figured.” She glanced down at Maggie. “She’s said it about six times already.”

For a moment, the tension eased. Then Clare’s eyes dropped to his vest.

She saw the patches. Ryder noticed the exact instant recognition arrived.

Her posture changed subtly. Her shoulders tightened. Her hand moved closer to Maggie. “Well,” Clare said, still polite but more distant now, “we should probably get going. I need to get this little wanderer home for lunch.”

She managed a smile, though it did not quite reach her eyes. “Thank you again. Really. What you did means more than you know.”

“Just glad she’s safe,” Ryder replied, stepping back to give them space. He could read the signals clearly.

Maggie waved enthusiastically. “Bye, Mr. Ryder! Thank you for helping me find Mommy!”

Clare gave him one final nod. Gratitude and ingrained caution warred across her expression.

Then she turned and led Maggie away, her steps a little too quick to be casual. Ryder stood perfectly still in the autumn sunlight and watched them go.

The leather of his vest felt heavier than it had a few minutes earlier. The patches seemed suddenly louder. Fragments of Clare’s voice drifted back on the breeze.

“Maggie, sweetheart, what did I tell you about wandering off? You scared Mommy so much.” Ryder returned to his bench.

The park continued around him, but the place felt different now. His mind kept replaying Clare’s words.

Thank you. It means more than you know. The sincerity had caught him off guard.

People did not thank Ryder. They avoided him.

They crossed streets when they saw him coming. They whispered after he passed.

That had been his reality for so long that he had stopped expecting anything else. A group of mothers hurried past his bench, pulling their children closer.

Usually, the sight barely registered. Today it stung.
