"And every employee whose job was endangered because of this will hear directly from leadership before they hear rumors from the market."

The board chair opened his mouth.

Evelyn continued before he could interrupt.

"If this board still wishes to vote on my removal after reviewing the evidence, then vote."

She looked at each person.

"But I will not resign simply because someone spent a year teaching me to doubt myself."

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

"And I will not pretend I discovered this alone."

Daniel looked down.

Applause began somewhere near the far end of the table.

He hated it immediately.

He had never wanted applause.

He did not want an executive office.

He did not want his picture in a business magazine.

He wanted to get back to Rebecca's house before Lily finished breakfast.

Three weeks later, Grant Meridian headquarters looked different.

Outside auditors occupied half the conference rooms.

Federal investigators came and went.

Financial teams worked late correcting reports.

Several executives were placed on administrative leave.

Victor Hail agreed to cooperate with investigators. He admitted that Marcus had approached him almost two years earlier with information that could have destroyed Victor's career over an old accounting violation. What began as blackmail slowly became participation.

Victor had helped Marcus access systems.

He had preserved the old Dock 14 server.

He had authorized surveillance.

But he had not designed Northstar.

He had not created the false identity network.

And when Marcus's plan began involving Daniel and Lily, Victor had started leaving small openings in the system, hoping someone would discover the truth without forcing him to confess directly.

It did not excuse him.

It explained him.

Marcus Vale faced a legal battle that would likely last years.

His supposed death became a national story.

The business press spent days arguing about corporate governance, fraud, leadership, and how one of the largest logistics technology companies in the country had nearly been dismantled through records that appeared legitimate individually.

Grant Meridian's stock dropped sharply.

Then stabilized.

Several major customers paused contracts.

Most returned.

But the biggest change was harder to measure.

Employees knew the truth.

One morning Daniel walked into Grant Meridian headquarters wearing the same maintenance jacket he had worn at the Sterling Grand.

The receptionist looked at him.

"Mr. Carter?"

"Daniel is fine."

"Ms. Grant is expecting you."

"That's never reassuring."

The receptionist laughed.

Daniel entered the elevator.

When the doors opened upstairs, Evelyn was waiting.

She looked healthier than she had three weeks earlier.

Still tired.

But different.

More present.

"You could have taken the executive position," she said as they walked toward her office.

Daniel glanced at her.

"I know."

"I offered you vice president of systems risk."

"I remember."

"Most people don't turn that down."

"Most people don't have Lily."

Evelyn nodded.

They entered her office.

The city stretched beyond the windows.

On her desk sat a cream-colored envelope.

She handed it to him.

Daniel opened it.

HEAD OF SYSTEMS INTEGRITY.

The job reported directly to both operations and independent audit.

Four-day workweek.

Flexible hours.

Remote work when necessary.

Salary large enough that Daniel read it twice.

He looked up.

"You made this."

"I offered it."

"That's different."

A small smile appeared.

"You've said that before."

Daniel read the schedule again.

"I can pick Lily up from school?"

"Every day."

"Parent-teacher conferences?"

"Go."

"Soccer practice?"

"Does she play soccer?"

"No."

Evelyn frowned.

"Then why did you ask?"

"I wanted to see whether you'd say yes."

For the first time since they met, Evelyn laughed.
