Daniel entered.

He found the problem in six minutes.

Closer arm misaligned.

One mounting screw had loosened enough to shift the bracket.

He tightened it.

Adjusted closing speed.

Tested the latch.

Then noticed the magnetic contact was also slightly loose.

He fixed that.

At 10:58, Daniel exited the restricted hallway.

That was when Victoria saw him.

She had just finished an argument with legal about the information leak.

Security was already on her mind.

Confidentiality.

Unauthorized access.

A strange employee in a maintenance uniform walked out of the executive records corridor carrying tools.

Victoria stopped.

“You.”

Daniel turned.

“Ma’am?”

“What were you doing in there?”

“Fixing the records door.”

“Who authorized you?”

“Facilities ticket.”

“Who?”

Daniel pulled the folded work order from his pocket.

“I can show you.”

Victoria barely looked at it.

“I just asked security to restrict this corridor.”

Daniel frowned.

“My access was approved.”

“By whom?”

“Dispatch.”

“That does not answer the question.”

Employees had begun appearing from nearby offices.

Victoria felt watched.

That mattered more than she realized.

Daniel opened the work order.

“Executive assistant submitted…”

Victoria cut him off.

“Give me your badge.”

He looked at her.

“Ma’am, I can call dispatch.”

“Badge.”

“Please just let me…”

“I said give me your badge.”

Daniel went quiet.

He unhooked it.

Held it out.

Victoria grabbed it.

The clip snapped.

Daniel looked down at his shirt.

Victoria said:

“You entered a restricted executive area during an active security issue.”

“Security will escort you out.”

“You’re done.”

Daniel could have argued.

He knew exactly who submitted the ticket.

He had the work order.

He knew his access was valid.

But forty employees were watching.

Victoria was angry.

Daniel had learned something from years of repairing equipment around people under stress.

Sometimes adding force to force only breaks more parts.

So he said:

“Okay.”

Then Victoria turned over the badge.

The number stopped her.

HR Vice President Allison Park was summoned to the lobby.

She arrived expecting an access violation.

Victoria handed her the badge.

“Who is employee 001?”

Allison looked.

Then looked at Daniel.

Her face changed immediately.

“Oh.”

Victoria hated that sound.

“What?”

Allison lowered her voice.

“Daniel is legacy.”

“What does that mean?”

“He’s the first payroll employee.”

Victoria stared.

“First?”

“First.”

A few employees nearby heard.

The information moved through the lobby silently.

Victoria looked toward Daniel.

“Why are you in maintenance?”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Because that’s my job.”

Allison said:

“Victoria, before we do anything else, we need to verify the ticket.”

Victoria stiffened.

“I already…”

“Verify.”

Allison’s tone was respectful.

Firm.

It was the first resistance Victoria had encountered that morning.

She looked toward security.

“Bring us to conference room two.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I need to pick my daughter up at three.”

“You’re not leaving.”

Daniel looked at her.

Victoria realized how that sounded.

“I mean…”

She corrected herself.

“Please give us ten minutes.”

Daniel checked his watch.

“Ten.”

They entered the conference room.
