The sound of an engine turning onto Maple Ridge Court interrupted them. A dark sedan moved steadily down the street, its government plates barely visible from their position.

The vehicle slowed as it approached, then stopped directly in front of 427. The driver's door opened.

A tall man in dark slacks and a white dress shirt stepped out, his movements controlled and deliberate. He wore a navy windbreaker with three bright yellow letters across the back.

FBI. Marcus Carter took in the scene with a single sweeping glance.

His wife standing in handcuffs. two patrol officers beside their SUV. Neighbors gathered on porches and sidewalks.

His expression remained completely calm as he approached. "That's far enough," Ror called out, his hand moving instinctively toward his weapon.

"This is an active police investigation." Marcus stopped walking but didn't retreat.

"That's my wife."

"I don't care who she is to you. You need to step back."

"Officer, my name is Marcus Carter." His voice carried easily across the distance between them, steady and professional.

"This is Danielle Carter, my wife of 12 years."

She lives at this address. Marcus reached slowly into his jacket and withdrew a leather credential case.

He held it open, displaying his federal identification and badge for both officers to see clearly. The change was immediate.

Hayes's grip on Danielle's arm loosened completely. His hand fell to his side as he stared at the federal credentials.

Ror's notepad remained frozen halfway to his pocket, his pen still in his other hand. The silence stretched for several seconds.

"Sir," Hayes said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. Marcus walked closer, his credentials still visible, his movements non-threatening but purposeful.

"Officers, I'm not here to interfere with your duties. I'm simply trying to understand what's happening."

Ror found his voice again, though it came out rougher than before. Your wife was acting suspiciously in the neighborhood.

We received a complaint. A complaint about what specifically?

Suspicious person moving between houses. Marcus nodded slowly, as if processing the information.

And what crime did she commit? The question hung in the air like smoke.

Ror opened his mouth, then closed it. His eyes darted between Marcus's federal badge and the growing number of neighbors watching from their yards.

Mrs. Rodriguez had been joined by three more residents.

Mr. Peterson stood at the edge of his driveway with his arms crossed.

She was detained for investigation, Ror said finally. Investigation of what crime?

The suspicious activity complaint. What was suspicious about her activity?

Ror's jaw worked silently. His notepad remained half hidden against his uniform.
