Waiting.

The men believed they had the advantage.

They believed the large, aging farmer hiding somewhere in the darkness was afraid.

They had no idea who they were dealing with.

The night air thickened with smoke as Otis moved through his property with practiced silence.

His large frame disappeared into the shifting shadows cast by the burning barn. Years of military training had taught him patience, awareness, and the value of letting an opponent reveal his own mistakes.

Through his equipment, Otis watched Wade’s men spread out across the property.

They were overconfident.

They had no coordination.

Their attention jumped from one sound to another as the darkness and smoke worked against them.

Otis used the farm itself to confuse them, triggering lights and distractions from different directions. Every unexpected noise made the intruders more nervous, and every nervous reaction exposed more of their positions.

“What was that?” one man shouted.

Another spun toward a sound in the darkness.

“Jimmy, that you?”

Wade’s voice cut across the property.

“Stop jumping at shadows, you idiots! Find that old man!”

Otis stayed patient.

One of the attackers separated from the others and moved deeper into the property.

Moments later, Otis intercepted him.

The confrontation was quick and controlled.

By the time the others realized someone was missing, the man had been disarmed and restrained.

The gang’s confidence began to crack.

Their movements became faster and less organized.

Their voices rose.

They fired toward things they could not clearly see, wasting ammunition and frightening each other more than they frightened Otis.

“Something ain’t right,” one of them called.

“Wade, this feels wrong.”

Otis watched from the darkness.

Fear was beginning to replace arrogance.

He shifted position again.

Another disturbance echoed from a different section of the property, drawing several men away from one another.

The confusion spread.

Smoke drifted across the yard.

Bright lights suddenly illuminated parts of the farm, forcing the attackers to shield their eyes and stumble backward.

The men cursed and shouted, no longer sure where Otis was or how many defenders they were facing.

Otis moved only when necessary.

Each confrontation was short.

Controlled.

Designed to stop the immediate threat without turning the property into the kind of bloodbath Wade seemed to want.

“He’s everywhere!” someone screamed.

Wade stood near his truck trying to rally what remained of his group.

“Stand your ground!”

His voice cracked.

“It’s just one old man!”

Then Otis’ voice came from somewhere in the darkness.

“You boys picked the wrong farm.”

The effect was immediate.

Two men broke toward their vehicles.

Otis let them go.

They would tell the story better than any warning he could give.

Billy Gryom, Wade’s younger brother, was not so lucky.

He had moved too far from the others and found himself caught and helpless before he understood what had happened.

His shouting carried across the field.

“Billy!”

Wade’s voice finally held genuine fear.

Bright lights flashed across the property again.

Through the smoke, Otis approached Billy.

The young man’s eyes widened.

The large farmer he had mocked as slow and harmless emerged from the darkness with complete control over the situation.

“Please,” Billy said.

His voice was suddenly small.

“Don’t kill me.”

“Not my style,” Otis replied.

He made sure Billy could no longer threaten anyone, then disappeared back into the darkness.

Wade and the remaining men found Billy shortly afterward.

Their bravado had vanished.

They struggled to help him while shouting at each other.

“Fall back!” Wade finally ordered.

“Everybody, move!”

Otis watched their vehicles retreat down the gravel road.
