Fletcher picked up his phone.

He opened the saved deed.

His name.

Address.

County seal.

Purchase date.

Everything visible.

He held the phone toward Craig.

Craig looked at the screen for less than a second.

Then turned his head away.

"I can't verify digital documents. Anybody can fake something on a phone. You know that."

He stepped away from the window.

"Here's what I'd suggest. Come back Monday during business hours. Bring your real paperwork, the originals, and we'll get this sorted out."

Come back Monday.

To his own home.

Approximately 200 feet away.

The house he could probably have seen from the entrance if the hedges weren't so thick.

Fletcher remained still.

Then spoke in a low, controlled voice.

"I'd like your full name and employee identification number, please."

Craig crossed his arms.

His jaw shifted.

"Craig. That's all you need."

"Your last name."

"I said that's all you need."

The tone had changed.

Warning.

Behind the Range Rover, Dennis shifted his weight.

He had barely spoken, but the golf cart was now positioned even closer.

If Fletcher wanted to reverse, he would first need Dennis to move it.

A small act.

Quiet.

The kind of thing meant to make somebody feel boxed in without technically touching them.

Then Fletcher heard tires approaching from behind.

He checked his mirror.

A silver BMW was rolling toward the gate.

Inside sat a white couple.

The man wore a pastel polo.

The woman held a coffee cup.

They stopped behind the golf cart.

Craig turned.

The moment he saw the BMW, everything about him changed.

His shoulders relaxed.

His jaw unclenched.

He smiled.

A wide, warm smile.

The kind he'd never shown Fletcher.

Craig lifted one hand in a familiar wave.

Then walked toward the driver's side of the BMW.

"Morning, folks. Good to see y'all. Beautiful day, huh?"

No ID.

No clipboard.

No license-plate inspection.

No questions.

Craig simply returned to the booth and pressed the gate control.

The iron bars slid open.

Smooth electric hum.

The BMW rolled through without stopping.

The woman in the passenger seat didn't even look up from her phone.

Then the gate closed again.

Heavy.

Final.

Fletcher watched every second in the mirror.

The smile.

The wave.

The gate opening.

The effortless assumption of belonging.

Then silence.

He turned toward Craig.

The guard was already walking back toward him.

Arms crossed.

Face reset to stone.

"You just let them through."

Fletcher's voice was quiet.

Almost gentle.

"No ID. No verification. No questions."

Craig lifted one shoulder.

"They're residents. I recognize them."

The words sat in the warm September air.

I recognize them.

Meaning he didn't recognize Fletcher.

Meaning the other couple looked like they belonged.

And Fletcher didn't.

Cicadas buzzed in the oak trees.
