He told them about the ocean in a throat and the suitcase without space for wood and wire. He told them that inheritance is sometimes only a hum, and that a hum can become a life if a room agrees to listen.

There was a spring morning when Noah, gray at the temples now, visited the apartment building above the old laundromat. The laundromat had become a cafe with ferns in the window and a chalkboard announcing oat milk. The apartment had new tenants; a bicycle was locked to the railing. He did not go inside. He stood on the sidewalk with a paper cup of coffee and looked up at the window where Ruth Hale had once hummed an ocean into a small kitchen. A bus sighed at the corner. A child ran past with a backpack listing under the weight of books. Life, unsentimental and ongoing, refused to pose for nostalgia.

Still, he hummed a bar of the song. The street did not applaud. It did not need to. Some music exists to keep a person company while the world remains itself.

That same year, the Meridian Grand's ballroom hosted another charity dinner. Noah was not the featured artist; Camila was—grown into a young woman who played with a fierceness that made people forget to sip their wine. In the program notes she thanked her mother, who still worked catering. She thanked the Harold Quince Fund. She did not thank Noah by name, because he had asked the fund's recipients never to feel they owed him a public sentence. Private thank-yous, if they came, he kept in a box in his studio beside Langford's faded card, Harold's pencil-marked Bach, and a photograph of Harold asleep under a coat in the side parlor.

During intermission, Noah stood near the service doors—his old geography—and watched Camila laugh with her mother. Elena, beside him, squeezed his hand.

"Look what one chance does when it multiplies," she said.
