Margaret appeared then, as Margaret always did when she sensed her brother standing too still. She wore a wool coat over a Sunday dress and the expression of a woman who had been waiting three years to see Walt Harlan look at anyone the way he was looking at the floorboards near Ruth's boots.
"Walt. Introduce me before I introduce myself."
"Margaret. This is Ruth Callahan. Ruth—my sister, Margaret Ellison. She bullied me into coming."
"I persuaded," Margaret corrected. "There's a difference. You play beautifully, Miss Callahan. Even with the broken string."
"Mr. Harlan fixed that," Ruth said. "I owe him a dance lesson and possibly a pie."
