"Please don't. The evening is already strange enough without you becoming sensible. Sensible is what I left on the platform with my second thoughts."

They talked through the first hour as the train shouldered north along the corridor. Claire told him about Bloomingdale's in December—the crush of shoppers with paper lists and damp wool coats, the mannequins in sequins posed as if joy could be purchased by the yard, the way the store smelled of perfume samples and desperation and hope mixed into something almost edible. She told him about the early mornings when the floors were still polished and empty and she could walk the aisles like a curator in a museum of wanting. She told him about growing up in Westchester with a mother who collected Royal Doulton figurines and arranged them by height, and a father who collected silence and arranged it by meal. She told him she had moved to the city at twenty-two with two suitcases, a sewing kit she rarely used, and a conviction that beauty was a kind of work worth doing, even if the work sometimes felt like arranging other people's longing into neat displays with sale tags.

"And the white?" Samuel asked, gesturing lightly at the coat, the pants, the ghost of the gloves. "Is that beauty-as-work or beauty-as-armor?"

"Both," she said. "Also spite. Grant once said I should wear softer colors because they photograph better at firm parties. I wore white to every firm party after that until he stopped commenting. Petty, I know."

"Efficient," Samuel corrected. "Petty would be dyeing his ties pink. This is infrastructure."

She laughed properly then, head tipped back against the burgundy seat, and the sound filled the wood paneling the way heat fills a room that has been cold too long.
