The yard went quiet after Samuel Avery made the offer. Reuben Shaw was accustomed to men negotiating over land, horses, debts, and human lives with the detached tone of merchants comparing weather. What unsettled him was not the amount of money. It was the certainty in Samuel Avery's voice.

“I said she is not for sale,” Reuben Shaw repeated.

“Then why is she tied beside a trading wall?” Samuel Avery asked.

No one answered. A wagon creaked somewhere behind the sheds. A Black laborer carrying feed slowed for half a second, then continued without lifting his eyes. Every person in that yard understood that the wrong kind of attention could become punishment.

Samuel Avery crouched near Lydia Ashcombe. He did not touch her at first. “Can you hear me?”

Her blue-gray eyes shifted toward him. She looked educated, exhausted, and furious beneath the numbness. When he asked her name, Reuben Shaw interrupted sharply and claimed she answered to Mary.

The woman’s lips moved.

“Not Mary,” she whispered.

Reuben Shaw's face tightened.

Samuel Avery stood again. “Now I know why you won’t sell her. You are not protecting property. You are hiding evidence.”

He doubled the offer, then quietly promised Reuben Shaw something money could not buy: if the woman remained there when he returned with a magistrate, every ledger in the yard would be opened.

Every pause in the conversation drew more eyes from the yard. By then, retreat would have been safer, but safety was no longer the point. The captor spoke with the confidence of a man who believed paperwork could turn wrongdoing into custom. The hero kept his voice low because anger was useful only when it remained under control. Still the road ahead held questions that none of them could answer before morning came again quietly.
