“I understand.”

“I represent Mr. Brooks and have been invited to present evidence directly relevant to the association’s potential liability.”

Karen looked toward Stephen Lowe, the HOA attorney.

Stephen leaned over and whispered.

Karen’s face tightened.

Then:

“Proceed.”

Rebecca connected her laptop to the projector.

The first image appeared.

Daniel’s driveway before demolition.

Smooth.

Clean.

Complete.

Rebecca spoke calmly.

“This photograph was taken approximately ten days before the incident.”

Next image.

County permit.

“Approved.”

Next.

Inspection.

“Passed.”

Next.

Final inspection.

“Passed.”

Karen stared forward.

Then the video began.

8:03.

Truck.

Excavator.

Karen.

The room became silent.

Rebecca played the audio.

“All of it.”

Someone gasped.

Then:

“No county involvement necessary.”

Linda turned toward Karen.

Gregory whispered something under his breath.

The video continued.

Concrete broke.

The excavator bucket tore through the base.

The drainage line snapped.

Worker:

“We hit something.”

Karen:

“Is it dangerous?”

Foreman:

“Probably not.”

Karen:

“Then keep going.”

Marianne covered her mouth.

Walter closed his eyes.

Karen’s face went pale.

Rebecca stopped the video.

“No editing has altered the sequence.”

She displayed metadata.

“Original files have been preserved.”

Then came Karen’s text messages.

OWNER OUT OF TOWN UNTIL TUESDAY.

NEED COMPLETED BEFORE RETURN.

The crowd erupted.

“You knew?”

“You waited until he left?”

“Are you serious?”

Karen reached for the microphone.

“This is being taken completely out of context.”

Daniel spoke for the first time.

“What context changes the sentence?”

Karen looked at him.

Daniel’s voice remained level.

“You knew I was out of town.”

“You ordered the work finished before I returned.”

“You told them the county wasn’t necessary.”

“You told them to continue after they broke my drainage.”

“What context fixes that?”

Karen had no answer.

Walter stood.

“I need to say something.”

People quieted.

Walter faced the room.

“I was present at the meeting Karen called.”

He swallowed.

“I asked whether Daniel’s county approval should be enough.”

“Karen said the county did not run the community.”

Walter looked at Daniel.

“I should have pushed harder.”

“I didn’t.”

“I regret that.”

Karen snapped:

“Walter, this is inappropriate.”

He turned.

“No.”

“For six years, that sentence has worked.”

“This is inappropriate.”
