No performance.

Linda blinked.

Then gave the smallest smile.

“Aaron.”

“I would never touch private property.”

I looked at the severed cable.

“Good.”

She glanced toward the conduit.

“You really should be careful how exposed wiring is routed.”

“It looks vulnerable.”

That was an odd thing to say.

“The provider installed it.”

“I’ve told you that.”

“I know.”

She looked toward the alley.

“I noticed it this morning during my walk.”

“What time?”

“Early.”

“How early?”

“I don't know.”

“Seven?”

“Maybe.”

She began moving away.

“I reported it to the HOA management company.”

“Why?”

“Because damaged infrastructure affects the neighborhood.”

I almost asked whether she had reported it to the carrier.

Instead:

“Who exactly did you notify?”

“The community manager.”

She walked back through the side gate.

“Hopefully your provider fixes it quickly.”

I watched her leave.

Something about the interaction felt wrong.

Not proof.

Pattern.

I called the HOA management company.

The community manager, Steven Brooks, answered.

“Linda said she reported a damaged fiber line this morning.”

Silence.

Then:

“She sent me a message at 10:46.”

I looked at the carrier timestamp.

Signal lost 10:31.

“What did she say?”

Steven read.

Saw exposed cable behind Whitaker residence. Possible utility damage. Please document ongoing concern about nonconforming service installation.

Not:

Fiber cut.

Not:

Outage.

Not:

Vandalism.

Nonconforming service installation.

I thanked him.

Then posted a short factual message on the neighborhood app.

My fiber service line was deliberately severed this morning. The carrier has confirmed there is no neighborhood outage and has opened a vandalism repair ticket. I have documented the damage and will allow the provider to inspect it before anything is moved.

If anyone has cameras covering the rear alley between approximately 10:15 and 10:45, please preserve the footage.

No accusations.

No names.

Within seven minutes, twenty-three people had viewed it.

Then comments.

Tom Alvarez:

My alley camera might catch the pole. Checking tonight.

Megan Lewis:

That’s insane. Who cuts internet cable?

Robert Dale:

Could landscaping crew have done it?

I responded:

No landscaping work occurred behind my property this morning.

Someone named Cheryl offered me a generator.

I wrote:

Appreciated, but electricity is fine.

She replied:

I panic-help.

Then Linda commented.

The HOA is aware of the reported damage. There have previously been concerns about exposed and visually disruptive wiring in this area. Residents should avoid speculation until the service provider completes its assessment.

I read it twice.

There have previously been concerns.

She had inserted the aesthetic complaint into a vandalism event without saying why.

I did not reply.

At 2:30, my employer’s IT security team called.

Not because I had reported Linda.

Because the company-managed connection had failed over to cellular during a monitored work period.

“Aaron, we saw the endpoint change transport unexpectedly.”

“Physical fiber cut.”

“Carrier issue?”

“Suspected deliberate damage.”

Pause.

“Was company equipment accessed?”

“No.”

“Any sign of entry?”

“No.”

“Any threat or targeting?”

“Unknown.”

I explained the HOA dispute.

The security analyst became more serious.

“Document everything.”

“Already am.”
