“This is harassment!”

Her carefully maintained composure finally broke.

“These people don’t understand property values.”

“They don’t understand community standards.”

“People come into decent neighborhoods and think rules don’t apply to them.”

The implication behind her words was obvious.

The same tone she had used in the parking lot months earlier had now been captured clearly in front of residents and television cameras.

Mrs. Olivia gasped when Brenda turned toward her.

“You people have no idea what I’ve done for this community.”

The room went still.

Harold reached for Brenda’s arm.

“Brenda, sit down.”

She pulled away.

“I protected property values.”

“I kept standards high.”

“I kept this neighborhood from turning into chaos.”

Her voice shook now.

Not with authority.

With panic.

She pointed toward me.

“And he has been undermining everything since he moved in.”

Emma was not in the room.

Neither was Tyler.

I had made sure of that.

For the first time that evening, I was grateful they were somewhere else.

Nobody needed to see an adult come apart like this.

Harold tried again.

“Brenda, please sit down.”

She ignored him.

Instead, she moved toward the presentation boards.

For one second, I thought she was simply trying to read them.

Then she grabbed one.

She pulled at the paper.

Jim Torres stepped forward.

So did two other homeowners.

Nobody hurt her.

Nobody needed to.

They simply kept her from destroying the documents and moved the boards out of reach.

Officer Martinez stood.

That was enough.

Brenda stopped struggling.

For several seconds, she stood there breathing hard beneath the fluorescent lights while cameras recorded everything.

Then Patricia Lopez rose from her seat.

Her voice was calm.

“I move for the immediate suspension of Brenda Whitmore from all board authority pending completion of the financial audit and the ongoing investigations.”

Another board member immediately seconded the motion.

Gerald stared down at the table.

Nobody spoke.

Patricia looked toward him.

“Call the vote.”

Gerald swallowed.
