He'd called the police 3 minutes ago.
The police had told him to wait.
Because nobody was breaking any law.
They were just standing there.
At 6:52 a.m., Preston Aldridge's county-issued SUV pulled into the lot.
He stopped at the entrance.
Stared through the windshield at 200 leather vests and 200 pairs of eyes all turning in his direction at once.
His hand went to his phone.
Then he put it down.
Because calling someone would mean admitting he didn't know how to handle this.
And Preston Aldridge had spent 23 years building a reputation as a man who could handle anything.
He pulled forward.
Parked in his reserved spot. The one closest to the building entrance.
The one with his name on a small metal sign.
He got out.
Straightened his charcoal wool overcoat.
Locked the SUV with the key fob.
The beep echoed across the silent lot.
Then he walked toward the entrance.
200 bikers watched him go.
Nobody moved. Nobody spoke.
Luther Burnham stood in the center of the front row.
Arms crossed. Expression neutral.
The scar on his jaw catching the early light.
Preston's eyes found him as he passed.
Recognition flickered. Just for a second.
Then it was gone.
Preston kept walking. Up the steps.
Through the front door. Into the building.
The door closed behind him.
Morris, the security guard, exhaled.
"What do I do?" he asked.
Quietly. To no one in particular.
Luther turned his head slightly.
Looked at him.
"Nothing," Luther said.
Voice calm. Conversational.
"We're not here to cause a problem. We're here to make sure one gets solved."
"By standing in the parking lot?"
"By being visible when people would rather we weren't."
Morris didn't have an answer for that.
At 7:08 a.m., the first county employee arrived for work.
A woman in her mid-50s.
She pulled into the lot, saw the motorcycles, and kept driving.
Circled back 5 minutes later.
Parked on the street two blocks away.
Walked in through the side entrance.
At 7:14 a.m., three more employees did the same.
At 7:23 a.m., a reporter from the Welch Daily News showed up with a camera.
Luther let him take photos.
Answered his questions with three sentences.
