At eleven-thirty, someone knocked.

Not politely.

Three hard blows.

I froze.

Another knock.

I looked through the peephole.

Sarah.

For several seconds, I simply watched.

She looked smaller.

Not physically.

Something in her posture.

The Sarah who left me had seemed almost inflated by certainty.

This woman looked exhausted by uncertainty.

Her hair was wet.

Makeup streaked.

Dark circles beneath her eyes.

She knocked again.

“Mark.”

I could have ignored her.

Maybe I should have.

Instead, I opened the door but kept the chain latched.

Her face changed the moment she saw me.

“Mark.”

“What are you doing here?”

“I needed to see you.”

“How did you find my address?”

Sarah hesitated.

“Dave.”

Of course.

“We’re going to discuss that later.”

“Please.”

“Can I come in?”

“No.”

The word hurt her.

I saw it.

“Just five minutes.”

“You can talk from there.”

Sarah looked down the hallway.

Then back at me.

“I know this is crazy.”

“Yes.”

“I know I shouldn’t have come.”

“Correct.”

“But you wouldn’t answer.”

“That was an answer.”

She closed her eyes.

“I deserve that.”

I said nothing.

Sarah wiped beneath one eye.

“I made a mistake.”

“Okay.”

The word stopped her again.

Same word.

Different night.

“Please don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“That.”

“Act like none of this matters.”

“It mattered.”

“Past tense?”

“Yes.”

Her face crumpled slightly.

“I’ve been in hell.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You don’t sound sorry.”

“I’m sorry you’re hurting.”

“I am not responsible for stopping it.”

Sarah gripped the strap of her purse.

“Alex lied to me.”

I said nothing.

“He said we were building something.”

“He said marriage was an outdated institution.”

“He said what we had was beyond labels.”

“Then he proposed to Chloe after nine months.”

“I found out on Instagram.”

Her laugh came out broken.

“Do you know how humiliating that was?”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

That stopped her.

Of course I knew.

Sarah lowered her eyes.

“I deserved that.”

“I’m not interested in deciding what you deserved.”

“He used me.”

“Maybe.”

“He used my contacts.”

“My work.”

“My ideas.”

“He had me editing his photographs at three in the morning.”

“And I thought it meant we were partners.”

I listened.

Not because I owed her.

Because once, I had loved her deeply.

That does not disappear into pure indifference just because a boundary becomes necessary.

Sarah looked at me through the gap in the door.

“I understand now what I did to you.”

“No.”

She flinched.

“You understand something similar happened to you.”

“That isn’t the same as understanding me.”

“Then help me understand.”

“No.”

“Mark.”
