Greg had never told me.

During our marriage, we had actively talked about maybe having another child someday.

Not immediately because I had been exhausted and overwhelmed with a toddler.

But someday.

We had agreed on someday.

Apparently, while I was recovering from childbirth and desperately learning how to be a mother, my husband had quietly and unilaterally decided there would never be another baby with me.

He went to a clinic, had a vasectomy, and never once believed his own wife deserved to know about a permanent change to our reproductive future.

Then he cheated on me.

Left me for my sister.

Married her.

And silently watched her spend years agonizing, crying, and putting her body through painful fertility treatments while genuinely believing her body was failing her.

All while he knew he had made pregnancy impossible without further medical intervention.

I asked Sarah, my voice barely above a whisper, why the hell he had done it.

Sarah looked sick.

She said Khloe had told her Greg completely panicked after becoming a father to Leo.

He felt trapped, financially overwhelmed, and absolutely certain he never wanted the burden of another child.

He hadn’t told me because he knew I wanted more children and feared I might leave if I discovered he had taken the choice away from me.

He didn’t tell Khloe before they married because having children was her biggest dream, and he feared she would leave him if she knew.

There it was.

It wasn’t some evil mastermind’s Machiavellian plan.

It was pathetic, naked cowardice stacked on top of cowardice until it became a monstrous lie capable of consuming another person’s life.

“How long has she known?” I asked.

“A few weeks.”

I took a sip of cold coffee.

“And does my mother know?”

Sarah looked down into her lap.

“Yes. Khloe told her immediately.”

I laughed.

Once.

Quietly.

So sharply that the woman at the next table turned and looked at me.

Because if I hadn’t laughed, I might have stood up and started screaming in the middle of the restaurant.

My mother had spent months relentlessly accusing me of tormenting my sister simply by being pregnant.

She had called me cruel.

Insensitive.

She had ruined my announcement.

And now she knew the truth.

Khloe’s own husband had hidden a vasectomy from her for years and allowed her to build an entire infertility narrative around her supposedly defective body.

Yet my mother still had not corrected one single thing she had said about me.

She was still letting me be the villain.

“Why are you telling me this?” I asked.

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

She said she had gone back and forth for days and lost sleep over it, but she couldn’t stand by and watch my family continue to frame me as a cruel monster when the truth was so much more twisted.

Khloe had told her in strict confidence.

Sarah knew she was betraying her friend by telling me.
