He thought of Caleb. He thought of the edge of the bed and the moon lamp and that’s not what I asked.
"I told him yes."
"I’m not asking what you told him."
"I know." He closed the passport. "I want to say yes. I’d like to think I’d have gotten off at the airport exit. But I think—honestly—I think I’d have sat in this driveway for an hour first. With the engine running. Trying to figure out how to tell her."
Danielle nodded slowly. "I know. That’s why I booked it." She looked down at Caleb’s sleeping face. "I thought if your name was on it, you might get there in time."
"And if I didn’t?"
She did not look up. "I’d have rung a solicitor from Mum’s kitchen in the morning. I’d have rung you. I’d have done it properly, Marcus. I wouldn’t have hidden him from you. I’d have told you exactly where he was, every day. But I’d have stayed until I was sure. Until I knew she wasn’t in this house and you weren’t going to tell me again that it was only a pop."
"You’d have taken him."
