Only for a second.

Something passed between them.

Understanding.

Then the door shut.

Wilson locked it this time.

The click echoed through the room.

“This doesn’t change anything,” Mitchell said.

He sounded like he was speaking to himself as much as Andrew.

“You still trespassed. You still became aggressive. We still had to subdue you.”

“Is that the story you’re going with?”

Andrew’s voice remained steady.

“That’s what happened.”

Wilson moved toward her bag near the door.

She pulled out a preprinted arrest form and began filling in the blanks with practiced efficiency.

Andrew watched her write.

“You’ve done this before.”

“Every day,” Wilson said without looking up. “Part of the job.”

“It’s not part of the job. It’s a crime.”

Mitchell crouched in front of Andrew until they were at eye level.

His voice dropped to something almost conversational.

“Let me explain how this works.”

He pointed toward the door.

“You came in here making threats. You assaulted me when I tried to detain you. I had no choice but to defend myself.”

He nodded toward Wilson.

“Sergeant Wilson witnessed everything.”

Then toward the hallway.

“Officer Brooks will confirm the timeline.”

Mitchell leaned closer.

“That’s three sworn officers against one troublemaker with a history.”

“I don’t have a history.”

“You do now.”

Mitchell stood.

“Wilson, book him. Assault on an officer. Resisting arrest. Trespassing.”

“You can’t do this.”

“I just did.”

Mitchell moved toward the door.

His hand was already on the knob when Andrew spoke again.

“Your career ends tomorrow morning at eight o’clock when I walk into that ceremony and take my oath.”

Mitchell turned.

“What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about the fact that you just assaulted your new commanding officer in front of witnesses, with cameras in the hallway, during shift change, when half this department can verify that I entered this building peacefully.”

Wilson stopped writing.

“He’s bluffing.”

But Mitchell wasn’t sure anymore.

The ceremony was real.

Brooks had confirmed it.

And this man spoke with too much certainty.

Too much specific knowledge.

“Who are you?” Mitchell asked.

“My name is Andrew Harris.”

Andrew paused.

“Tomorrow morning, I become chief of police.”

Mitchell stopped breathing for a moment.

“And the first thing I’m going to do is open an investigation into what happened to my brother, Brandon Harris, three years ago in this exact room.”

Mitchell’s face went from red to white.

All the color disappeared.

“Brandon Harris,” he whispered.

Then realization hit him.

“That was your brother?”

“He called 911 because he was having a mental health crisis. He needed help.”

Andrew’s voice stayed even.

“You assaulted him instead.”

Wilson’s pen stopped moving.

“Then the death was written up as a medical emergency. Evidence was altered. Reports were changed.”

Andrew continued speaking with the measured calm of someone reading from a case file.

“Department protocols were violated. Civil rights complaints were buried. Serious crimes were covered up inside this station.”

Mitchell backed toward the wall.

His breathing became shallow.

“You came here on purpose,” he said. “You wanted this to happen.”

“I came here for a meeting.”

Andrew looked at him steadily.

“You chose to assault me. That is on you.”

“This was a setup. You’re wearing a wire.”

“I’m not wearing anything.”

Andrew glanced toward the door.

“I didn’t need to. One of your own officers has been documenting everything.”

Mitchell’s eyes went toward the hallway.

“Brooks?”

“He’s a Marine, like me.”

Andrew’s voice stayed calm.

“We recognize each other. And we recognize when orders violate the oath we took.”

Wilson moved toward the door.

“We need to call Walsh. Now.”

“Walsh can’t help you.”

Andrew looked toward her.
