Vanessa’s quieter right lasted. She brought greens to the next dinner and sat down before anyone could make a speech. Derrick said the greens were too salty. Vanessa said then eat them. He ate them. Eating was a truce. Patrice cut the pie in the kitchen, out of sight of symbols, and brought slices. Slices were ordinary. Ordinary was the campaign. The football game was on. Kids ran. Nobody stood behind a empty chair. The empty had been said. Said things could sit down.
The first of the month stayed written on the calendar in Patrice’s hand. Derrick sent the money with her in the room once, so the send would not be a drawer. She watched the confirmation. Confirmation was a new grace. She did not say amen. Amen was too much. She said it went. He said yes. Yes was enough. Imani’s dentist got paid. Lorraine sent a one-line receipt to Derrick. He showed Patrice. Showing was the rule. The rule held. A house can be rebuilt out of shown receipts. It is not romantic. It is a table.
Imani came to the city once, in the spring, for a college fair, and met Derrick at a coffee shop Lorraine had approved. Patrice did not come. Not coming was the no-scene promise. Derrick bought a tea he did not drink. Imani said, “Your wife called my mother.” He said, “She did not know you. That was my fault.” Imani said, “I know.” The know was seventeen and precise. She had Lorraine’s mouth. He did not say she looked like him. Looking-like was a claim. He asked about the fair. She said nursing, maybe. He said Lorraine would know the hospitals. She said she knows. They sat forty minutes. She did not hug. He did not ask. The not-ask was manners. He drove home and told Patrice the forty minutes. Patrice said good. Good traveled. June, told, said forty minutes is a life. Patrice said it is a start.
The warehouse gave Derrick a day shift. Day shift meant he was home for dinners. Dinners were quieter than Thanksgiving and more useful. Patrice set two plates and sometimes three when June came. She did not set a fourth for a symbol. Symbols were retired. Vanessa came once a month and sat immediately, a joke they all understood and did not tell. Understanding without telling was the quieter right in practice. They ate. The game was sometimes on. Nobody waited to pray until a chair was explained. Explanation had happened. Once was the quota.
