Then came the pounding.

Three heavy strikes against the front door.

Derek stopped.

Years of conditioning returned instantly.

That was not a neighbor’s knock.

He pulled out his phone and opened the doorbell application.

Uniformed officer.

Standing close to the door.

Hand near his belt.

Nicole looked over.

“Something wrong?”

“Officer outside.”

“What for?”

“No idea.”

Derek walked toward the entryway.

He did not feel afraid.

Not yet.

He expected a question.

Maybe an incident nearby.

Maybe a stolen vehicle.

Maybe someone had reported something unrelated.

He opened the door.

“Afternoon, Officer.”

Harland didn’t greet him.

“Step outside.”

Derek paused.

“Can I help you?”

“I said step outside.”

The tone immediately changed Derek’s posture.

Not aggressive.

Alert.

He knew the difference.

“Why?”

“I need to talk to you.”

“You are talking to me.”

Harland stared.

“Step outside and we can handle this easily.”

Derek remained behind the threshold.

“Handle what?”

Harland looked past him into the house.

“I saw someone matching your description around this property earlier.”

Derek almost smiled from disbelief.

“You saw me.”

“Step outside.”

“I was mowing my lawn.”

“We’ll determine that.”

Derek’s expression changed.

“My lawn.”

Harland did not answer.

“This is my house.”

“Then you shouldn’t have a problem coming outside and proving it.”

Derek felt something old and unpleasant settle into his chest.

He had experienced racial suspicion before.

A store employee following him.

Traffic stops where questions seemed to continue long after their legitimate purpose ended.

People assuming he was security rather than a guest.

None of that disappeared because he had worn a badge.

If anything, twenty-two years in law enforcement made him more aware of the line between reasonable suspicion and assumption.

He looked directly at Harland.

“Officer, is there a reported crime?”

“That’s not your concern.”

“It becomes my concern when you order me out of my home.”

Harland took half a step closer.

“Last time. Step outside.”

Derek’s voice remained even.

“What specific reasonable suspicion do you have that I committed a crime?”

The question hit Harland differently than Derek intended.

To Derek, it was legal precision.

To Harland, it sounded like defiance.

“Don’t start playing lawyer with me.”

“I’m asking why I’m being detained.”

“You aren’t being detained unless you keep refusing instructions.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

Harland’s hand moved closer to the Taser on his duty belt.

Derek noticed.

So did the camera.

Derek deliberately moved his hands where Harland could see them.

“Let’s slow this down.”

“I told you what to do.”

“And I’m telling you I live here.”

“Then prove it.”

“I can show you identification from inside.”

“No. Step outside.”

“Why?”

Harland’s face reddened.

“Because I’m giving you a lawful order.”

Derek shook his head.

“No. You’re giving me an order. That doesn’t automatically make it lawful.”

Harland’s eyes narrowed.

Inside, Nicole heard the raised voices.

She wiped her hands and walked toward the hall.

“Derek?”

He turned slightly.

“I’m okay.”
