Chloe already knew.
Jack knew too.
"You."
Richard began crying.
"They made me."
Jack stared.
"They made you aim?"
Richard did not answer.
"They made you squeeze?"
Nothing.
Jack stepped so close Richard had to look up.
"You murdered my brother."
The Sergeant at Arms moved forward again.
Others followed.
Chloe suddenly understood how quickly the moment could change.
Ninety-seven grieving men.
Three years of unanswered questions.
The person responsible standing within reach.
Jack looked at Chloe.
For several seconds the entire desert waited on him.
Then he spoke.
"We can end him right here."
Richard went pale.
Jack's gaze remained on Chloe.
"Or we do this your way."
Chloe was startled.
"My way?"
Jack nodded.
"You brought us to him."
Richard looked toward her.
For years Chloe had imagined Richard powerless.
She imagined screaming back.
Hitting him.
Watching him afraid.
Now it was real.
She held her father's wrench.
She could walk toward him.
Swing.
Nobody there would stop her immediately.
Richard knew it too.
"Chloe."
His voice changed.
Soft.
Manipulative.
The voice he used after hurting her.
"Come on."
Chloe stared.
"Don't listen to these people."
Jack said nothing.
"They're criminals."
Chloe almost laughed.
Richard continued.
"I'm your family."
The words hurt more than she expected.
Chloe remembered locked doors.
Empty plates.
Bruises.
Nights listening to Richard walking down the hallway.
Her mother crying in the kitchen.
Her father teaching her to use a wrench.
Enough to hold.
Not enough to destroy.
Chloe slowly lowered the tool.
Richard smiled.
Then she spoke.
"No."
His smile vanished.
"I don't want him dead."
Jack watched her.
"I want him alive."
Richard's relief lasted less than a second.
"Alive long enough to lose everything."
Chloe looked at his badge.
"His job."
Then his gun.
"His freedom."
Then his face.
"His name."
Richard shook his head.
"Chloe."
She continued.
"Call the FBI."
Jack's mouth turned upward.
"Federal field office in Los Angeles?"
"Yes."
Chloe pointed toward the Shovelhead.
"Leave everything where it is."
The bullet.
The hidden vest.
The motorcycle.
"Make sure they see it."
Richard backed toward his SUV.
Jack nodded to two riders.
They moved.
Richard tried drawing his weapon.
Three men reached him before the gun cleared the holster.
Seconds later the weapon was on the ground.
Richard was face down.
He screamed threats.
"You'll all go to prison!"
Nobody struck him.
Jack stood over him.
"You already confessed in front of ninety-seven witnesses."
Richard went silent.
The Sergeant at Arms picked up the deputy's radio.
Jack looked at Chloe.
"You sure?"
She nodded.
"Do it."
They secured Richard beside his cruiser and removed his weapon.
Jack did not allow anyone to take the badge as a trophy.
"Evidence," he said.
The radio call was brief.
A rider with legal experience provided the location and requested federal law enforcement because of an alleged homicide, public corruption, narcotics activity, and compromised local authorities.
Richard heard every word.
He began sobbing.
For Chloe, the sound produced no satisfaction.
She thought it would.
Instead she felt tired.
Deeply tired.
