"Satin's a classic," Jake said automatically, then winced. "I have to stop saying that."

"Never stop," Elena said. "It's terrible. I love it."

They talked the way people talk when the night has already decided to be strange and kind. Elena told him, in pieces, about a family that measured love in food and volume, about parents who had moved back to San Antonio two years ago for her father's work at a parts plant, about the way the goodbye at the bus station had felt temporary and then slowly revealed itself as a hinge in her life. She had stayed in Ohio because the diner had promised her a management track that kept turning into more shifts and the same paycheck, and because leaving felt like admitting the Midwest had won a fight she had not agreed to schedule. She had a little money saved in an envelope taped inside a copy of a paperback romance she never read. She had a bigger loneliness. Tonight she had almost stayed home and eaten cereal from the box while pretending the snow was a movie with better lighting.

Jake told her about Claire and the hospital and the delayed flight, about working days at the auto shop on Trimble Road, where he could diagnose an engine by sound the way some people diagnosed moods at a dinner table. He told her about learning to listen to machines because machines did not ask him why he still went to the rink. He did not tell her yet about the ankle in full. He let the backward skating sit between them like a puzzle she had already started solving with her eyes.

Mikey finished his cocoa and declared himself ready to "do laps for science."

"Science of what?" Elena asked.

"Of not falling," Mikey said, and then, after a solemn pause, "and of falling in a cool way if I have to." He zoomed away, orange jacket a moving caution sign that somehow made everyone smile.

Jake watched him go, fond and alert in the way of people who have been handed a small life and told to keep it unbroken for one night.
