Nia bathed Amara and put her to bed in the half-empty room with the elephant and a night-light shaped like a star. She sat on the edge of the mattress and rubbed Amara's back in slow circles the way she had when Amara was a baby with colic and the nights were long and Marcus would bring warm bottles and bad jokes until the crying stopped.
"Mom?" Amara murmured.
"Yes."
"Is Miss Simone in trouble?"
Nia considered. "No. Miss Simone helped Daddy with grown-up problems. Mommy is upset about the problems, not about Miss Simone being kind."
"Are we still moving?"
