Your mother kept me away.

She did not say:

Grandma is back.

She said:

“Happy birthday.”

That was all.

Ethan squeezed harder.

“You came.”

“You asked.”

“I came.”

After several seconds, Claire said quietly:

“Okay.”

Evelyn released him immediately.

Not because she wanted to.

Because Claire had asked.

Ethan looked at the cake.

“Is that mine?”

“If your mom says yes.”

Claire looked at Evelyn.

Something moved in her face.

Small.

Surprise.

Then:

“Yes.”

Ethan lifted the box.

“Chocolate!”

He carried it toward the kitchen.

“Mom, can we do candles now?”

“After dinner.”

“But Grandma's here now.”

Claire looked at the clock.

4:03.

Then at Evelyn.

“Fine.”

“One slice before dinner.”

Ethan cheered.

Evelyn almost laughed.

Two years earlier, she would have said:

Let him eat the whole thing if he wants. It's his birthday.

Now she said nothing.

Claire found a lighter.

Evelyn removed the nine candles from her purse.

Ethan placed them himself.

Crooked.

Two almost touching.

Claire started to correct one.

Then stopped.

Evelyn noticed.

Maybe both women were learning.

The candles burned.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Made a wish.

Blew.

Evelyn clapped.

No photographs.

Claire had not approved them.

They ate small slices at the kitchen table.

Ethan talked.

At first cautiously.

Then continuously.

He no longer loved dinosaurs.

Now it was astronomy.

Evelyn nearly laughed at the coincidence.

“Space?”

“Yes.”

“Saturn is my favorite.”

“Because of the rings?”

“No.”

“Because it has the best moons.”

He spoke for four minutes about Titan.

Evelyn listened.

Then asked:

“What do you like about Titan?”

She did not tell him what she knew.

Did not correct.

Did not turn the conversation into a lesson.

Listened.

At 4:22, Ethan asked:

“Did you bring a present?”

Evelyn looked at Claire.

Claire noticed.

“Did you?”

“I have something in the car.”

“What?”

“A telescope.”

Claire stared.

“You bought him a telescope?”

“Last year.”

Ethan’s mouth fell open.

“Last year?”

Evelyn immediately said:

“I bought it before we stopped speaking.”

“I kept it.”

“But if you don't want him to have it…”

Claire interrupted.

“Does it connect to the internet?”

Evelyn blinked.

“I don't think so.”

“Model?”

Evelyn told her.

Claire looked it up on her phone.

Manual telescope.

Beginner model.

No camera.

No app.

Claire looked toward Ethan.

His entire body seemed to vibrate.

Then back at Evelyn.

“He can have it.”

Ethan shouted.

Evelyn stood.

“Thank you.”
