Those evenings acquired a ritual shape. Ava would announce the crisis of the day — a quiz, a friendship slight, a missing library book — and Thomas would listen with the gravity the crisis deserved, which was usually more gravity than the crisis strictly required and exactly as much as Ava needed. Monique would heat leftovers. They would eat. Thomas would walk home across the dark grass and find that his empty house felt slightly less empty for having been left and returned to.

He learned things about Marcus he had not known as a neighbor. That Marcus had sung off-key in the car on purpose to make Ava laugh. That he had been afraid of thunderstorms since childhood and pretended he was not. That he had once driven four hours in a snowstorm to deliver a Christmas bicycle because the shipping company had failed them. That he had cried, only once that Monique knew of, in the weeks after Beckley — in the garage, with the door down, thinking no one could hear.

"I heard," Monique told Thomas one Tuesday, after Ava was in bed. "I stood on the other side of the door and I didn't go in. I thought he needed the privacy. Now I wonder if he needed a witness."

"You couldn't have known," Thomas said.

"No. But I can know now. That's what the letter gave me, along with everything it took. A way to understand the silences. A shape for the quiet he brought home."

Ava asked about the letter only once that autumn.

It was a Saturday in November. They were raking leaves in Thomas's yard — Ava had insisted on helping, barefoot until Monique marched over with sneakers and an expression that brokered no debate — and Ava paused with a fistful of maple gold and said, "Was the person who wrote it a good person or a bad person?"

Thomas leaned on his rake. The question was enormous. He gave it the honesty it deserved.
