"Survivable for whom?"

He had no answer that did not indict him further, so he offered silence, which was at least honest.

Elena took a hotel room that night. She left the rolling bag packed. She left the coat on the couch. She left Marcus standing in the doorway of the loft saying her name one more time into a hallway that swallowed it. In the hotel she showered until the water ran cool, sat on the bed in a towel, and called her mother because some emergencies require the original witness of your life.

Denise Brooks answered on the second ring, voice warm with the expectation of engagement chatter and travel updates. Elena said, "Mama," and then could not continue for a full thirty seconds while Denise waited the way mothers wait when the silence itself is the message.

"He cheated," Elena said at last. "I found out tonight. At the station. There was a woman in his coat."

Denise's breath left her in a sound Elena remembered from childhood falls and fever nights — the sound of a woman rearranging her strength for someone else's use. "Are you safe?"
