Rachel stopped so hard her heel scraped.
The camel coat was suddenly ridiculous. The black dress was suddenly a confession. Andre, beside her, became impossible to explain by any sentence a person could say in front of a child. The sparkling water caught the pendant light and looked, for one stupid second, like champagne. Rachel's blue eyes went to the balloons, to the cake, to her mother's pearls, to Sophie's bent card, and last, because the last look was the one that would cost her, to Jason.
Her mouth made the shape of a prayer that was not a prayer.
"Oh my God…"
The room heard itself. The cheer died the way a radio dies when the hand on it understands. Megan's phone dipped. Carol's hands, still lifted, froze at the height of applause. Richard's smile thinned into a question. Daniel's grin held a moment longer than the others because he was looking at his brother and not yet at the man in the green sweater. Sophie took two more steps and then stopped, because her mother's face was not the face the card had been made for.
Jason's smile did not collapse. It left. What remained was the man underneath, solid, athletic, hazel eyes moving once from his wife's evening makeup to the stranger's leather shoes and back again, doing a calculation he had never prepared for and arriving at the answer anyway.
"Rachel?"
