I had no plan.

That was unusual for me.

For twenty minutes, I followed roads almost randomly.

Neon signs.

Traffic lights.

Convenience stores.

People carrying groceries.

A man walking a dog.

The city continued normally despite the fact that my relationship had just ended.

I found that comforting.

Eventually, I stopped at a chain hotel near the highway.

The receptionist barely looked at me.

One night.

King room.

Credit card.

Driver’s license.

Elevator on the left.

The room was aggressively generic.

Gray carpet.

Beige walls.

A framed photograph of a bridge nobody would voluntarily photograph.

A mini refrigerator humming loudly in the corner.

It was perfect.

Nothing in it belonged to Chloe.

Nothing contained a memory.

I dropped my bag.

Then stood in the silence.

The clarity started fading.

Pain moved in behind it.

My chest tightened.

I sat on the bed.

For one dangerous second, I almost called her.

Habit.

Not judgment.

My brain had spent years treating Chloe as the person I called whenever something hurt.

Now Chloe was the thing hurting me.

That contradiction felt almost impossible.

My phone buzzed.

10:47 p.m.

Where are you? This isn’t funny.

Two minutes later:

My closet is empty. Did you seriously take all your stuff?

Then:

Did you take my black heels??

I stared.

I had not.

Then:

Answer me.

Then:

You’re overreacting.

Then:

I’m going out anyway. I’m not rewarding this behavior.

There it was.

Even after I left, the evening continued.

I ordered a cheeseburger.

It arrived cold.

The fries were limp.

I ate everything.

The phone kept lighting.

11:21 p.m.

Seriously? Silent treatment?

11:48 p.m.

You need to grow up.

12:32 a.m.

Hope you’re happy.

Then nothing.

At 3:17, she called.

I watched the screen.

No answer.

At 3:24, another call.

Then voicemail.

I did not listen until morning.

I slept in the center of the bed.

That mattered more than it should have.

For almost three years, I had unconsciously occupied half of everything.

Half the bed.

Half the closet.

Half the bathroom counter.

Half the sofa.

That night, I slept diagonally.

I woke at 7:12.

No alarm.

For three seconds, I did not know where I was.

Then everything returned.

I listened to Chloe’s voicemail.

“Alex.”

Her voice was slurred.

“The closet is so empty.”

A sniff.

“You really left?”

Then silence.

“You just left?”

She sounded confused rather than heartbroken.

“I didn’t mean…”

A long pause.

“Come home.”

“We need to talk.”

“I’m sorry you misunderstood.”

I stopped the recording.

There it was.

I’m sorry you misunderstood.

Not:

I’m sorry I humiliated you.

Not:

I’m sorry I dismissed your concerns.

Not:

I’m sorry I gave you an ultimatum because I assumed you were too attached to accept it.
