Sabine seemed to recognize this without being told.

She never forced conversation.

Never bought Mara expensive gifts.

Never offered promises.

Then the architecture project happened.

Mara had entered a school design competition.

Build a scale model of a community library.

Her design had a wide central room beneath a pitched roof.

The model looked beautiful.

Structurally, it was a disaster.

Mara knew something was wrong but could not identify what.

She spent an hour rearranging balsa supports.

Then pushed the whole model away.

“I hate it.”

Sabine was crossing the kitchen with coffee.

She stopped.

“What?”

“The roof.”

“May I?”

Mara shrugged.

Sabine crouched.

Studied the model.

“Your ridge beam is carrying too much span.”

Mara looked up.

“You know architecture?”

“Some.”

“How much is some?”

“Three years working beside architectural teams before I moved into operations.”

“Did you study it?”

“No.”

“I studied finance.”

“I just listened to people smarter than me.”

Donovan heard that from the stove.

Not a sentence he expected from Sabine Porter.

She did not fix the model.

She explained load.

Compression.

Where weight traveled.

Why something could appear strong while transferring force badly.

Mara asked questions.

Good ones.

Sabine drew one diagram.

Then pushed the pencil back.

“You rebuild it.”

Mara did.

Forty minutes later, the roof held.

Mara looked at Sabine.

“You can sit down if you want.”

That invitation mattered.

Sabine understood.

She sat.

In exchange, Mara taught her watercolor mixing.

Sabine made every color brown.

Mara told her she lacked restraint.

Sabine replied that no board member had ever accused her of that.

Mara did not understand the joke.

Donovan did.

He smiled into the sink.

It might have remained manageable if Graham Vail had not been planning several moves ahead.

The photograph appeared nine days after Sabine entered the workroom.

Sabine exiting the side door at 7:36 in the morning.

Donovan behind her carrying a toolbox.

The frame excluded everything useful.

No workshop sign.

No loading dock context.

No separate entrance.

It looked intimate.

A powerful female executive leaving a modest building at dawn beside a male employee.

The first headline was cautious.

ARDEN CEO’S POST-DIVORCE LIVING ARRANGEMENT RAISES GOVERNANCE QUESTIONS.

The second was not.

SABINE PORTER HIDING WITH COMPANY EMPLOYEE AMID DIVORCE DISPUTE.

By noon, blogs had Donovan’s name.

By afternoon, someone found old photographs of Mara through a school art event.

That changed everything.

Donovan called the school immediately.

Nobody released Mara without him.

No media contact.

No unfamiliar visitors.

Sabine’s attorneys issued a cease-and-desist regarding the child.

Graham’s publicist released a statement two hours after the first photograph appeared.

That timing bothered Donovan.

The language was too polished.

Too ready.

“Mr. Vail remains deeply concerned about any personal conduct that may affect the stability and governance of Arden Group during this sensitive period.”

Sabine read it twice.

“He had that written before the photograph.”

Donovan looked at her.

“You sure?”

“No.”

“But I know Graham.”

The Arden board convened that evening.

Questions came quickly.

Was Sabine in a relationship with an employee?

Had Donovan received preferential contracts?

Had restoration work been directed to his private business?

Did Sabine’s personal judgment create corporate liability?

Every answer was no.

That did not prevent inquiry.

Donovan was placed on paid administrative leave the next morning.
