Audrey followed him into the alley.

“You tracked me.”

Preston turned.

“You appeared in a public video.”

“You pushed tenant buyouts before the audit.”

“I am running a company while you conduct moral experiments on sidewalks.”

Audrey’s face hardened.

“Harbor Row work is frozen.”

“For now.”

“Not for now.”

“Until independent review.”

Preston smiled.

“You still think your signature controls people who haven't seen you in three years.”

“It controls the board resolution.”

“You should ask whether Cole still believes your signature matters.”

He walked away.

When Audrey returned inside, Oliver was waiting.

His phone lay on the counter.

Screen open.

Search results.

AUDREY BELL CARILE CEDAR BRIDGE.

Old articles.

Company formation records.

Photographs more than a decade old.

One showed a younger Audrey beside two partners at a construction site.

Oliver looked up.

“Who are you inside Cedar Bridge?”

Audrey stopped.

“I helped start it.”

“How much do you own?”

She said nothing.

“Audrey.”

“A large share.”

“That isn't a number.”

“No.”

Oliver pushed the phone toward her.

“Is A.B. Carile you?”

“Yes.”

“Founder?”

“Yes.”

He stared.

“Why is the founder of Cedar Bridge sleeping above my cafe?”

“I’m investigating what Preston and Cole have done with Harbor Row.”

“Does Preston know Lucy is here every day?”

“Yes.”

“Is she in danger?”

“I don't believe he would physically hurt her.”

Oliver’s jaw tightened.

“Stop giving me the smallest true answer.”

Audrey absorbed that.

“He may pressure you through the lease.”

“Inspections.”

“Money.”

“Your business.”

“He may use Lucy emotionally if he thinks it changes your decisions.”

“You knew that when you stayed.”

“Yes.”

Oliver turned away.

Looked through the kitchen pass toward his daughter.

“You should have told me.”

“Yes.”

No explanation.

No excuse.

Audrey reached into her pocket.

Removed the studio key.

“The secure apartment will be ready tonight.”

“I can leave.”

Oliver looked at the key.

Then at her.

“The hearing?”

“Eleven days.”

“Move when the secure apartment is ready.”

“Until then?”

“Outside stairs.”

“Tell me everything that changes.”

“And no more answers designed to sound smaller than the truth.”

Audrey nodded.

“I understand.”

But secrets had consequences even after they were partially revealed.

Three nights later, the building alarm went off.

Oliver and Lucy were closing.

Audrey was upstairs.

A red indicator flashed above the rear hallway.

A horn sounded.

Oliver looked at the panel.

CO DETECTED - ZONE 2 / REAR RESIDENTIAL.

His entire body changed.

“Lucy.”

She froze.

“Coat.”

“Front door.”

“Now.”

“What…”

“Now.”

She ran.

Oliver took his phone.

Audrey called before he could call her.

“The upstairs alarm.”

“Outside?”

“Yes.”

“I used the exterior stairs.”

“Stay across the street.”

“Do not come back in.”

Oliver called 911.

Gave the address.

Mixed-use building.

Eighteen residential units across the connected Harbor Row structures.

Shared boiler room.

Carbon monoxide alarm active.

He did not run through hallways pretending courage could replace breathing apparatus.

He moved outside.

Then used exterior walkways and open-air landings to alert residents without entering contaminated interior corridors.

“Alarm!”

“Everybody outside!”
