A minor was potentially separated from a parent.

Staff had misrepresented a forced downgrade as voluntary.

And the decision appeared connected to status.

That was enough.

Ethan said:

“I want legal and compliance here.”

Robert stared.

“That is unnecessary.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.”

Marcus made the call.

Inside the cabin, Clare received the first hold notice.

The captain asked:

“What’s happening?”

“Ground says passenger record review.”

“Which passenger?”

Clare hesitated.

“1A.”

The captain looked at her.

“The one you moved?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Corporate accommodation.”

The captain frowned.

“That’s not a flight-deck reason.”

Clare’s stomach tightened.

Vanessa pressed the call button.

Clare went to her.

“How much longer?”

“I don’t know.”

“I have a meeting in Seattle.”

“I understand.”

“No.”

Vanessa said.

“I don’t think you do.”

“If this airline wants Sinclair Global’s business, delays like this are unacceptable.”

Clare forced a smile.

“We’re trying to resolve it.”

Vanessa gestured toward Ethan’s boarding pass on the console.

“This started because you indulged him too long.”

Clare looked down.

ETHAN WALKER.

She read it.

Then again.

Walker.

The surname triggered something.

A corporate video.

Annual training.

Board chairman Ethan Walker.

She had never met him.

The videos usually showed Ethan in a suit.

Shorter hair.

Different lighting.

Clare’s mouth went dry.

She stepped backward.

Vanessa frowned.

“What?”

Clare picked up the boarding pass.

“Nothing.”

Her tablet locked.

PASSENGER RECORD ACCESS SUSPENDED.

She tried again.

Same result.

The captain received another message.

“Everyone off.”

Clare looked at him.

“What?”

“Ground operations wants a full deplane.”

Vanessa heard.

“No.”

The captain did not argue.

“All passengers.”

Clare activated the announcement.

“Ladies and gentlemen, due to an operational review, we need all passengers to leave the aircraft temporarily with their personal belongings.”

Groans filled the cabin.

Vanessa remained seated.

“This is insane.”

Clare repeated the instruction.

Passengers began collecting bags.

Several stared at her.

The man who had recorded the confrontation checked his video again.

He knew something had changed.

Vanessa did not stand until the aisle nearly emptied.

Then she rose angrily.

Her assistant followed.

As Vanessa stepped onto the jet bridge, she saw Ethan.

He no longer stood alone.

Marcus Bennett stood beside him.

Rachel Monroe, director of legal and compliance, had arrived with two investigators.

An airport operations manager stood nearby.

So did a corporate security representative.

Robert looked as though he had not taken a full breath in several minutes.

Rachel spoke to Ethan:

“Chairman, we have the audit log.”

The word crossed the jet bridge.

Passengers heard it.

Clare heard it.

Vanessa stopped.

Slowly, she turned toward Ethan.

Her expression changed.

Not recognition exactly.

Calculation collapsing.

“Chairman?”

Emma looked at the people around them.

Then at her father.

Ethan remained in the same coat.

Same shoes.
