No understanding except the small one they rebuilt: ask before you touch the joke.

Ask.

Then cook.

Then sit down, three plates, Halloween over, school lot empty, string lights packed in other families’ trunks, this family on its own porch when October comes around again, candy in a bowl, hands visible, collars untouched, extra sauce waiting where only they keep it.

Only they.

That is the whole restoration available after a parking lot.

Not innocence.

Custody of a shelf.

Kelly can live on that.

Mark can work on that.

Noah can grow up on that, eating pasta, staying up sometimes, never again because a teacher said so in his mother’s kitchen while the sister up the highway washed bottles and thought the house at home was only a father and a son and a joke about sauce.

The joke, when it returns, returns smaller.

Get the extra sauce.

Noah gets it.

Kelly nods.

Mark waits.

The lot stays in the past tense.

Halloween stays a porch.

The witch hat stays gone.

And the sauce thickens on the stove like it is only food, because that is what they have forced it to be again, one Tuesday after another, after the cones, after the collar, after the child said pizza night as if the night belonged to everyone. It belonged to a kitchen. It belonged to a marriage. It belonged, after the lot, back to the three of them, and only the three of them, which is all extra sauce was ever supposed to mean: a stool, a shelf, a family joke no teacher should have been able to finish for them in a parking lot full of other people’s children and candy and orange cones. The joke is theirs again. They keep it that way on purpose, every time the jar comes down and the pasta hits the water and the three of them sit where a fourth plate does not get set, not on a Thursday, not on Halloween, not ever again in that kitchen tonight.
