When she could not, she went home and told James garden, and he said we’re not there, and she lived in the not-there until sleep.

The not-there is the marriage.

The garden is the scar.

Both exist.

Patricia: Do not make a scene, Claire. Not tonight.

She meant the uncle, the manager, the photographer, the deposit, the years she had smoothed. She also meant I cannot watch this club eat you. Claire heard only the first meaning in the moment. Later she heard the second. Both can sit in one low sentence.
