Grace walked away.

Nothing romantic developed between Daniel and Karen during that year.

Not because there wasn't warmth.

There was.

But both had complicated lives.

Karen worked too much.

Daniel was still building something and still grieving in quieter ways.

Sometimes relationships mattered without needing immediate labels.

They became friends.

Real ones.

Karen understood exhaustion.

Daniel understood single parenting.

Neither tried to rescue the other.

That was probably why the friendship worked.

The one-year anniversary of Grace's breakdown approached without Daniel noticing.

Karen remembered.

So did Nadia Cole.

Channel 9 contacted him.

"Follow-up story."

Daniel groaned.

Nadia laughed.

"You knew this was coming."

"No."

"One year."

Daniel looked around the expanded garage.

"Fine."

This time, the interview was different.

No viral crowd.

No surprise.

Nadia walked through three service bays.

Training classroom.

Community area.

Photos on the wall.

She interviewed Tyler.

Grace.

Marcus.

Peter.

Karen.

Chloe refused initially.

Then agreed to one question.

Nadia asked:

"What changed most after your dad helped Grace?"

Chloe thought.

"Our house got louder."

Everyone laughed.

Then she added:

"But he laughs more too."

Daniel looked away because that one landed deeper than he expected.

The first Second Chance graduation was held Saturday afternoon.

Twelve students.

Folding chairs.

Family.

Customers.

Teachers.

Nurses.

Local business owners.

No fancy stage.

Peter tried hiring event staff.

Daniel refused.

They served barbecue and grocery-store cake.

Tyler wore a clean button-down shirt.

His mother cried before his name was called.

When he accepted the certificate, Daniel shook his hand.

Then Tyler hugged him.

Daniel froze for half a second.

Then hugged back.

Tyler whispered:

"Thank you for not thinking I was useless."

Daniel's throat tightened.

"You never were."

After every student received a certificate, Marcus pushed Daniel toward the microphone.

"No."

"Speech."

"I hate speeches."

"You were on television."

"Against my will."

The crowd laughed.

Daniel stepped forward.

Chloe sat in the front row.

Karen and Grace beside her.

Peter in the back.

Tyler with his mother.

Daniel looked around.

"A year ago, this building had two bays, three chairs, and a coffee machine that technically qualified as a safety hazard."

People laughed.

He continued.

"I worked alone most days."

"Marcus was enjoying retirement and pretending not to miss this place."

Marcus shouted:

"I did not miss you."

More laughter.

Daniel smiled.

"Then one night, a teenager knocked on my door."

Grace covered her face.

Daniel looked toward her.

"Her car had broken down."

"She was scared."

"I fixed a hose."

"That should have been the end of the story."

He paused.

"But her mother told people."

Karen smiled apologetically.

"Then more people showed up."

"Customers."

"Reporters."

"Peter in a suit I still don't trust."

Peter laughed.

Daniel's expression softened.

"And eventually these students."

He looked toward the graduates.

"People keep telling me this program exists because I did something kind."

He shook his head.

"That's not quite right."

The room quieted.

"This exists because one person helped another, and instead of treating that as something unusual to admire from far away, a lot of people decided to participate."

He looked toward Frank Willis, the first truck customer.

"The customers came."

"Peter invested."

"Marcus returned."

"Karen volunteered."
